LIFE IN THE NEW NORMAL

Suparna Ghosh

In these series of writings I shall explore various ways of good living and mental well being in the ‘New Normal’.

So, what does a New Normal look like?

Even though we are slowly moving towards normalcy, there will still be restrictions and we will be facing fundamental shifts to our way of life.

We will go  through  situations where new realities will become normal. For example, working from home, temporary unemployment, home-schooling of children, and lack of physical contact with extended family members, friends and colleagues. Moreover, we are adapting to lifestyle changes, living in a constant fear of contacting the disease ourselves and fearing for the our loved ones. All these conditions will take a toll on the mental health condition of people.

What do we do to maintain our mental well-being?

There are lots of things that we can do to look after our own mental health and to help others who may need some extra support and care. Here are some basic tips:

  • It’s important to give yourself time to grieve what you have lost. There will be denial, anger, maybe even depression and acceptance, as we try to adjust to our new normal. Once you’ve allowed yourself to grieve, there will be more space to start embracing your new normal.

  • The new normal can be challenging at times, so celebrate anything that puts a smile on your face, large or small. It could be making a nice cup of tea in the morning. Playing with your child. Trying a new dish. Be innovative and constantly look for things that make you happy.

  • Keep yourself informed but do not over indulge and obsess yourself with watching news. Do not listen to news that makes you feel anxious or depressed.

  • Keep in regular contact with people close to you through telephone or online channels.

  • Avoid using alcohol and drugs as a way of dealing with fear, anxiety, boredom and social isolation. Do not start drinking alcohol if you have not been drinking before.

  • Be responsible while using your social media. Use social media to promote positive and hopeful stories. Correct misinformation wherever you see it.

  • Help others if you can, offer support to people in your community who may need it, donate to charity and most importantly give a lending ear to others.

Remember you have to be the source of joy to others.
